Funding FAQs

The Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (CARES Act) was enacted in March of 2020 as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic and included over $30 billion in funding for elementary, secondary, and higher education. The Coronavirus Response & Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act (CRRSAA) was enacted in December of 2020 and included over $81 billion in funding for elementary, secondary, and higher education. An update to CRRSAA made an additional $21 billion available to higher education institutions as of January 2021.

The American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 was signed into law on March 11, 2021. The law includes allocations of roughly $125B for the K-12 education system and nearly $40B for the higher education system.

Institutional portions of the Higher Education Emergency Relief Funds (HEERF I, II, and III), the Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER I, II, III), and the  Governor’s Emergency Education Relief (GEER I, II) can be used to support distance education and promote long-term improvements in technology infrastructure.

Future Ed and The New York Times partnered on a story last fall around the resilience, creativity, and ability to innovate demonstrated by schools in the face of the pandemic. Their story noted modern schools are more than education, they are a source of food, socialization, care, technology, and essential services that support our communities and prepare the next generation.

Local education departments, schools, and institutions should consider using funds to continue that mission with financial aid support; access to continued learning and student services without disruption regardless of the learning environment; providing support for student and staff health, mental, and social needs; and investing in technologies that will continue to provide benefits post-pandemic for both in-person and hybrid education.

About ConexED

We can help you scale your student services for virtual, in-person, and blended environments across the entire campus. Implementing ConexED reduces redundancy and confusion among multiple tech platforms, maximizes institution budget, and improves student success and staff satisfaction. ConexED and our partners continue to innovate with novel use cases for our software that truly make a difference.

K-12 and ConexED

As schools return to traditional face-to-face instruction, a hybrid approach to engagement and student services benefits students, faculty, administrators, and parents. Schools did an admirable job quickly transitioning to virtual learning and support during the pandemic, and now is the time to review what worked and how to improve on providing support in the future.

Health and emotional well-being

The Covid pandemic transition to virtual learning continues to have a dramatic impact on student mental health and social development. “We were calling this a mental health crisis before the pandemic. Now it’s a state of emergency,” said Amir Whitaker, policy counsel of the ACLU of Southern California. Schools are a literal lifeline for students: of those receiving mental health care, 70-80 percent receive that care in a school setting.   Using ConexED removes barriers and safely enables this necessary student and professional interaction.

According to research, the vast majority of students want to return to safe, in-person learning. As an Academic Communication System, ConexED can facilitate achieving this goal through appointment scheduling for everything from Covid testing to both in-person and virtual health appointments utilizing chat or video.

The ConexED Academic Communication System is fully HIPAA compliant so students, parents, and staff are ensured security and privacy.

Distance, in-person and hybrid learning

The ConexED virtual classroom technology is designed to solve specific education needs, be fully compliant with safety and security regulations like FERPA, and enhance the experience for both a virtual and in-person approach. Your school can increase engagement between students and staff with the ConexED interactive platform with whiteboard capabilities and breakout rooms to allow for team project collaboration.

Seventy-three percent of district leaders and teachers believe greater access to 1-to-1 computing will make high-quality teaching easier. Device checkout can be managed through the ConexED student dashboard while inventory tracking and reporting can easily be managed by staff.

“The only thing that should be changed is how teachers communicate with us, there should be more communication.” The Covid pandemic has increased concerns about students missing milestones or falling behind. The ConexED platform provides an office hour scheduling system in addition to a virtual space for video or chat “walk-in” appointments. Every touchpoint is documented, saved, and easily reportable.

Student services and social programs

The Covid pandemic disrupted meal programs that are an integral nutritional source for many students and essential for their well-being. Estimates showed that even 3 days of school closures could result in more than 400,000 missed meals among school-aged children. Missed meals may have a significant impact on children’s health, nutrition, and food security.

The ConexED scheduling system enables parents and students who rely on these services to register and enables staff to ensure access and report on distribution. Scheduling lunch pick-up times ensures social distancing and monitoring missed pick-up can be an early indicator to reach out to a possibly struggling student.

The ConexED scheduling and appointment system enables therapists and social program support staff to ensure students continue to receive necessary services. Combined with the ConexED case management tools, educators can ensure students are meeting milestones and celebrating each step.

Tens of thousands fewer high school seniors completed the FAFSA in the spring of 2020 compared to the previous year, putting their future education at risk. The ConexED software enables continued support through appointment scheduling, virtual office hours, and case management to ensure students are ready for their next step and meeting deadlines.

Case management is needed now more than ever to help students succeed. With the ConexED dynamic early alert system, students and advisors can track academic progress. Met milestones are celebrated with engaging graphics because every positive step matters.

Higher Education and ConexED

In countless student focus groups that the Center for Community College Student Engagement conducted over nearly twenty years, students have consistently maintained that even if they thought about dropping out, a relationship with someone else on campus—an instructor, a staff member, another student—gave them the encouragement, guidance, or support they needed to keep going. The need for this connection has grown exponentially in the past year.

Health and emotional well-being

With the challenging climate, student mental health is a growing concern. 58 percent of college students surveyed said they were “moderately,” “very” or “extremely” worried about their own mental health. Schools can focus on providing in-person and remote counseling by using ConexED to remove barriers and enable student and professional interaction. Plus, ConexED allows students to share their mood before a meeting, providing critical insight for the instructor, advisor, or staff member.

Many institutions consider testing and tracing the backbone of keeping in-person learning possible and delivering on the expected student experience.

Institution services

Portions of federal relief funding must be spent to provide financial aid to students, giving them an incredible opportunity to pursue education regardless of financial circumstance. The ConexED platform can help facilitate this goal through appointment scheduling, on-demand chat, and virtual meetings that enable communication between students and financial aid advisors. Additionally, documents can be reviewed, signed, and completed during virtual video appointments.

“We have been able to use ConexED for advising appointments, online chat to answer questions, advise students in other states, and to register students for New Student Orientation. It is a one-stop shop that meets the majority of our needs.” The ConexED software enables continued support through appointment scheduling, virtual office hours, and case management to ensure students are moving toward graduation and ready for the next step.
